Seeds for a happy planet

The first thing that I wrote down from our circle on this misty grey Saturday morning, was: Who does the knowing?
This question didn’t get an answer right away; as in all good and generative conversations we walked different paths to finally come to an answer at the end; having found many other valuable insights in between.

We were building on the concept of Ho’oponopono and the question was raised: What if the collective feminine would take 100% responsibility for it all??? Wouldn’t that be something radical that hasn’t been tried before?
Later on it was mentioned that we would need something simple; like laying the white scarf – a habit from Afganistan that would bring everyone to stillness and stopping the conflict; like standing next to someone.

Another very present topic was the circle as we heard it in this little poem:
Someone drew a circle that left me out,
But love and I had the wit to win,
We drew a circle that took them in.

We have felt many times outside the circle, we have felt as victims. But we have kept the men outside this circle we drew for ourselves too.

Taking on responsibility… it was never not our responsibility… and sometimes we took too much responsibility; other times it was not recognized…
Responsibility is not an obligation… it is a response-ability…
To transmute everything from love.
Can we step off the stage from our cultural thinking and redraw the circle?

What is the feminine voice?
The feminine voice is simple.
The feminine voice is strong.
The feminine voice says it is Enough.
Instead of ‘taking on’ responsibility, – which sounds quite masculine – can we put the responsibility in our circle? And love it into wholeness?

Some wisdom from an old wise lady:
Men should hold the love,
women should hold the wisdom.
Waauw! I never heard that, but it makes a lot of sense! It would require for both genders to step into and act from vulnerability. That would indeed change a lot.

Then came a paradigm shift for me. If we, as women, should hold the wisdom, and we leave the love to the men, then how to ‘translate’ this responsibility? Loving into wholeness then becomes Knowing into wholeness! Maybe that is our magic: the magic of knowing from wholeness, from the depths of the World Soul. Receiving the seeds, receiving the information…

I repeat myself, but this was another amazing start of our Women Moving the Edge gathering. In our tradition we started with some music, not just to dance – but possible if you felt inclined – but to settle in and listen to want your body wanted.

She invited us to share what made us come here, what was calling, what is the edge we are on. Amazing stories followed, an amazing weaving of threads… I try to picture some of them…

One thread is about the power of place. We are in this ‘magical seaside village of Magnolia’, surrounded by the sea at three sides, and it seems to call forth the feminine. Apparently it is situated on a leyline with gives it a certain quality of energy. Through this little village runs what is called the Old Salem Road. Salem was the place in this region where the witches of the time were burned.

This relates to another thread that is very present to me since yesterday: Where did we loose the magic?
Is it holding the mystery of life?
Where is our wild woman?
Is it the magic that we long for?
Is it through living the magic that we are alluring?
How to reclaim the magic?

And how are both threads related? How can we call the powers of a place in service of moving the edge?

I want to birth who I am.
We want to birth who we are.
Moving into fears in order to live fully.
The unknowing is closest to wisdom.

Do I belong to the elders?
Rediscovering my fire
Tolerating the not-knowing long enough
A receptive movement

Do we dare to invite the magic in?
What is it that we don’t ask?

Of course, the magic is here! Are we aware of it?
Magic is being totally alive; magic is alchemy; magic is mystical.
Wanting to know magic from an earth place. When am I nurturing the light?

How can we heal the future?
Pain, held together, becomes something important.
Holding pain in an impersonal way.

The story of the practice of Ho’oponopono turned something upside down for me. It is a Hawain practice that means “to make it right with the ancestors, or to make right with the people with whom you have relationships.” “The one who was hurt would forgive the other immediately, because it is inappropriate for anyone to carry guilt any longer than they had to. We call this the Hawaiian Code of Forgiveness, and it’s an important thought, because when we forgive others, who are we forgiving? Ourselves, of course.”
Remembering all this hurting done to women and the feminine over decades and centuries are we staying the victims and let the masculine carry the guilt? Or can we see the pain the men and the masculine are in? Can we say: I love you?

Is this the magic we need to do?
Is this the transformation of the wounds of the past in service of the future potential that we named in our guiding question?

Is this the new story that we will attend to, releasing the old one?
Or is there more? The next days will tell…

Amazing to notice that the money system (how it is organized) and its related capitalist culture (the values that go with it) are coming to the center of my awareness. I’m in the preparation days leading up to the next Women Moving the Edge gathering and money and other related topics around boundaries, roles and agreements were very much present yesterday.
Judy and I tried to unravel it and we saw how the combination of capitalist culture and (catholic) religion made us not talk about money; at least not openly or when it is for ourselves. Part of it is seeing more clearly how the feminine values and capacities of taking care – for each other and for the community in general – is not rewarded and stays many times invisible in our current culture and system.

As people living in this transition from the old paradigm to the new (which is both the system and the culture), and providing teaching, guidance and mentoring for this transition, we have to deal with the current money system that is not valuing what we do and a new paradigm that is not translated yet into agreed upon new ways of value exchange.

For the first time in the life of Women Moving the Edge Time dollars are offered to us and are used to pay the people that cook the lunches and dinners in our preparation time. I’m looking out at how we can expand and innovate these new ways of exchange that will support all who are involved in it, participants and hosts alike.

As we know from the Art of Hosting practice, hosting relates to space, process and harvest. Hosting and designing the process that leads to self-organization and emergence isn’t that difficult. Many social technologies are there these days that can help you out. Hosting the harvest; making sure that the shared learnings and meanings are captured in a way that will feed into next conversations and wise actions is an art many are still learning and experimenting with.
Even more intangible and more difficult to grasp is hosting the space. Because next to creating a hospitable environment – with attention for a beautiful invitation, a welcoming room, some flowers etc. – there is a lot more to sense into and host.
Is the overall question nurturing the potential of this group or organization?
What are the needs of the participants and the collective as a whole that needs attention?
Are we reaching the deeper topics that will lead to more life-affirming actions?

All these intangible elements make that hosting is not just a technology but an art. If we then apply hosting to the topic of feminine consciousness and feminine ways of knowing, we end up with a ‘double intangible’, a double feminine. No surprice few can see its value and pay for it in the current economic paradigm that wants to measure and prove for individual gain.

There are two ideas or experiences very present to me now. One is the notion of ‘being an ecosystem of conversations’. This is very much how I identify myself these days as I see myself as a constant interweaving of different conversations. They all are kind of related, they build on each other, they weave concepts and ideas closer together or weave a new color in. The cloth that is woven is never finished, keeps on changing and becomes wider, bigger and deeper.
And this doesn’t only happen for myself, it also happens in the collective I’m most related to. Mostly women, I notice now.
To take the notion of ecosystem as the main identification means I drop more and more any attachment to form; or maybe better to say: any attachment to stable form. What I am seeking for these days is dynamic balance. There is nothing linear in that, but it is an always moving in many directions and levels.

A second notion that is very present with me is simplicity. Not for the sake of itself, but as a necessity to come to a way of living that is really life-affirming. It is probably not a simplicity in technology – I think we will need a lot of innovation in this area – but a simplicity in processes and relationships. I think it is the simplicity of self-organisation and emergence: just enough design to let it happen, and not too much.
It makes me return to gardening: learn to make good compost to nurture your soil; observe what happens anyway and build on that. Gardening is kind of simple when you work in synergy with nature. The really complex processes are done by nature itself, we can only improve the conditions where these processes can thrive and where they have enough resilience to respond to different circumstances. It seems to me that a lot of our planning in linear time (chronos) makes things complicated and build up a lot of stress. It is weird to say maybe, but there is simplicity in trusting synchronicity, trusting the experienced timing (kairos), trusting the mystery of life itself.

As usual, as the hosting team, we stayed on for the afternoon to harvest our learnings of this gathering. But first we took our coats and walked off to Richmond Park. We enjoyed the autumn sun, the trees coloring, an impressive sky and we paused near a little pond. We watched the ducks and noticed some young swans not yet totally white, but already with the posture and the movements of the bigger ones.

Back in our room, with another cup of tea, we could only restate: This process works! Cari wrote the recipe (with some little adjustments):
Lie in stillness
Connect to World Soul until you feel the juice
Move as long as you feel well
Take sisters with you
Move till silence comes again
Repeat as often as needed

Silence
We noticed this time there were more periods of silence. Not as an absence of words, but there was a quality of freedom in it; the freedom of being present and being able to listen for the next impulse. It was a real restful quality, as opposed to the frantic behavior of Humanity in our constellation the day before.

Culture of Authenticity
Our culture of Women Moving the Edge is a big invitation to be as close to your needs – or better: impulses – as possible; because it is each contribution to the whole. Through this practice acknowledgment, recognition and huge acceptance are just natural; almost as a byproduct, but so deeply touching and life-affirming.

Guiding Question
In our gatherings our guiding question(s) is always present. Mostly we will paint and draw it out on big sheets of paper and hang it on the walls. But our conversation is not moving in one straight line – and we don’t want it even – but it fills out in many, many directions. It seems we are creating a space – maybe a sphere or a container – of answers.
The process of sensing into these questions, again and again for every new gathering, and finding and naming them is very core to what we are able to accomplish. This is the real preparation, besides what is needed for organization and logistics. As hosting team we spend a lot of time on this. We have on average a 1,5 hour conference-call every two weeks, and this mostly for at least 3 or 4 months. That means that we can cover a wide and deep area of sensing, out of which the question arises. It is our collective felt sense who finally says: This is it! Then our final invitation can go out.

Thursday morning was our last half day in this seminar center, Kairos, “an urban oasis”. As we settled into our circle, I noticed that the question and topic around the World Soul was still in me. Even more so what the author stated that women are naturally build to hold the immanent light in their bodies. They don’t have to do huge efforts to get there, it is more a matter of realizing it is there and live from there.

How to understand?
How ‘to get’ what it means?
And how to get better
- as women -
at having a natural connection with the immanent light?

How to speak about the World Soul?
How to be the World Soul?

There IS a huge shift going on
- it’s a matter of fact –
and it goes towards the light.
It is not the end,
It is an opportunity;
And opportunity to re-member.

My Soul is member of the World Soul.
I can be the rare voice who speaks this.
I can sense the cracks and move with wholeness.

Can the World Soul count on me, to bring my light?
I can sense,
I can relate,
I can re-member.
The answer is in how I live my life.

Silence
In the silence my body is learning to embody soul.

Collective Silence
An old and grounded energy
What is its power?
Can we feel the potential?
Are we learning to embody the collective World Soul?

Collective Sourcing
Continual unfolding…

We – women – are the natural connectors.
We are the embodiment of the emergent system.
We are pregnant.

And suddenly I saw how conversations and gatherings are conceived, live and die. Like human beings, coming up from a wide and infinite sea of possibilities; live for some time and then retreat back. By our willingness to listen to the next question, we call the next gathering and conversations into being.

This one came to its end, a cycle completed. We would all go out in our own direction, taking the experience and the unfolded meaning with us. And in all these places and conversations some meaning would ripple out, but this gathering was over. I understood this also as a non-attachment to form; to release this form, this event. Making space and open up possibility for a next weaving of threads of potential.

Weird. I’m on my way to the next Women Moving the Edge gathering, and I still have to finish my blog posts from the previous one, which was just a few weeks away. So here is the description of how the constellation unfolded that we did on the third day. It is followed by a report of what we all understood from it afterwards. It is really amazing stuff!!!

Players in the constellation were Stillness, Trees, the Immanent World Source, Humanity and Juice/Lifeforce. As the facilitator of this constellation I didn’t point out which elements should be represented. I left it to the participants to choose for themselves what was calling to them and when they would take their place, wherever they felt it was.

In the beginning, there was Stillness… who walked into the space. She rose up on her toes, and started to wobble. Then the Tree moved in and stood behind Stillness, embracing her to ground and stabilise her. Soon they were joined by Immanent World Soul, who lay on the ground, face down at Stillness’s feet, holding her ankles to help keep her stable.

Meanwhile, in another part of the room, Juice started to jive, rocking back and forth like a dance rhythm or heartbeat – constant motion, constant motion. Humanity (not knowing herself yet as that) felt drawn to the movement, called to engage, moving closer, attention drawn inexorably towards the familiar energy of the life force. Humanity felt totally disconnected from Stillness and everything else in the room – just felt attracted to the Juice, and started to go with that, because it felt good.

In the Stillness-Trees-World Soul constellation, World Soul turned face up, reaching past Stillness and touching Tree. She turned because Stillness’s constant upward aspirations made her feel quite sick. When face up, the World Soul could begin to participate in life in a quite different way, and Stillness could look down at her, no longer feeling drawn upwards so strongly. Stillness then turned around to be in contact with Tree, which made her feel happy and light.

Juice and Humanity moved in closer to the others. They were clicking their fingers and jiving together. Juice wanted to get closer to the World Soul, came and stood at her feet, so they were facing each other. Humanity followed, because she wanted to stay close to Juice. The proximity of Juice made World Soul feel nauseous. Stillness wanted contact with Juice, but Juice just seemed to be doing its thing. It was at this stage that the constellation, together, determined the identify of Juice and Humanity. Humanity drew them both closer to World Soul – who recognised “the energy of Brazil”.

From the beginning, the relationship between Stillness and Life Force was ambivalent. Life Force: I want to tell her it’s OK to feel the impulse. When Stillness, seeking reciprocity, replied It’s OK to feel the stillness, Life Force replies It’s not my job, being unwilling to stop moving – and believing that in order to feel the stillness, she would have to stop – and that would kill her, she wouldn’t be herself any more.

The Tree spontaneously stepped out of the constellation and went and sat down.  This was a heart-breaking moment. The World Soul reacted (without having seen Trees leaving): Something has just died. Trees: I felt like I wasn’t needed any more. World Soul: Well you are needed – it was like some of the sap went out of the world.

When Juice and Humanity got closer to the World Soul, rocking around and being over-excited, World Soul retreated back to curl herself around the roots of the Tree – feeling more affinity with nature than with Life Force, which felt like it was ‘on a trip’. Humanity tried hard, to bring Stillness and Life Force together, but Life Force felt constricted and broke away. Stillness later noted that Humanity felt extremely hot already at this stage (man-made global warming?)

Humanity and Life Force were pulsing together in rhythm, very connected, but rather banging and jostling the others, particularly World Soul and the Tree, which knelt and crouched over World Soul. When asked to find her deepest longing, Humanity could find no answer. When asked if she felt well, she barely understood the question. Something’s happening – I don’t know if ‘well’ is the right word! Juice then started gesticulating, wanting the World Soul to come ‘up’, believing that Humanity was having a baby, and so wanting that to happen: I thought we were having contractions for a minute, over there (humanity) but it seems like labour has stopped. Humanity also felt like something was being birthed. But I couldn’t let go. The rest of the constellation felt like a monster was being born – like there was an orgy going on. With all the movement, knocking against the Trees and World Soul, the Trees crouched down over World Soul, It felt like hanging on for dear life – as if Humanity was going mad - and Stillness came and laid down at World Soul’s back, ‘creeping into her’. World Soul began crying in relief.

The facilitator encouraged Humanity to Find a place where you can rest. Keep following your body. Humanity then laid down – she literally put her head on top of the head of the World Soul (who wasn’t happy about that!). Humanity then lost consciousness – lying on the floor, face down, with her toes still flexed under her. With Humanity taking up less space, leaving the Trees and World Soul some space to recover, the Trees stood up, and Stillness moved away from the constellation and sat down on a chair to hold space.

Life Force then stated that she was holding the space and sensing that there was a possibility for something to happen, giving gentle urges for upward movement.  This activated the World Soul to turn over and connect with Humanity in an intentional way: The first thing Humanity is going to see when she comes around is me – Immanent World Soul. While humanity is still a bit groggy and feeling humble, World Soul is coming out of the closet, to make a BIG impression. World Soul started to arouse Humanity by blowing in her hair.

At the same time, Life Force was blowing the Tree. Stillness was trying to find a way to connect with Life Force, and it was Tree that offered a hand, so that Stillness and Life Force, who could not connect directly (because Life Force couldn’t stop moving), ended up being connected through Tree. When Stillness could finally touch Life Force, she understood that the intention was not to restrain her, just to have contact.

World Soul then awakened Humanity and the two stood up together, very slowly. Humanity needed time to rise, feeling the power of the magnetic connection with Immanent World Soul.

Post constellation insights

Humanity: I seem to be attracted to what felt good; not quite knowing what to do. Going into my body, I didn’t understand that question; I didn’t know what to do. At some point somebody told me not to hurt the trees; that was totally new information to me. Maybe humanity doesn’t get that yet, that it is hurting the trees? It felt like groping in the dark for me.

When the World Soul started to pull me up, everything was right; there was total connection, awakening, recognition, everything. In a sense, I was ready for this.

I didn’t really know my own exhaustion until I lay down on the floor. I tried so hard to make something happen, not knowing how. Wanting to know, seeking… a lot of trying.

At the end, I looked at both sides, for the first time I could really look and see – in a new way. (Trees were on one side, Life force and Stillness on the other side). That was really powerful.

Stillness: What stood out for me was the relationship with the Trees.

The relationship with ‘Juice’ was difficult. I did not want to move, and I had the impression that Juice did not want to be still, so we found ourselves locked in our positions. Then I could lay it on humanity and say “it’s up to you to solve this”. Humanity tried so hard. I had my hand on her back and she was so hot from the effort. And we tried, but it wasn’t a natural dance.

Then the constellation shifted and Trees and the World Soul lay together. It was so wonderful to lie there, behind and almost in the World Soul. It was so beautiful, and very vitalising. Until I woke up from what Humanity and Juice were doing – which was quite a disturbing scene. Humanity looked drunk. Like in a Bacchanalean orgy.

Humanity’s eyes showed me: I’m not drunk! Ria asked Humanity: Are you well? There was no connection! Humanity didn’t understand! It took an intervention from the facilitator.

World Soul: That intervention was the pivotal point! Ria asked: Listen to your body and follow your deepest longing. This didn’t work.

Facilitator: I saw that Humanity was not in connection with her body. It really changed when I said: “Find a place where you can rest”.

Juice: I felt like the Life Force, the creative energy; Juice was part of who I was… at some point it felt like we were having a birth… ‘something’ being born was OK for me. But it is good that it was stopped, it would have had three heads!

World Soul: Yes, it would have been a monster. When Humanity rested it gave the Trees a chance to reestablish. Then life and strength came back into me too. When Stillness and Life Force could find their dance I could… I was gently blowing in Humanity’s hair, she was totally knocked out. She was awoken by the faeries that she didn’t believe in, but it was there. The meaning of the immanent World Soul… it could only exist with the consciousness of Humanity, the conscious relationship between Humanity and World Soul. Humanity needed to be awake and sober, otherwise it couldn’t sense me. Then Humanity woke up and fell in love with me.

Trees: I was very struck by how central I felt; I was in the center of the holding. That was surprising. And really surprising was when Stillness found it’s place behind the Life Force; that was a perfect balance.

Another strong moment was when Humanity lost the plot. I thought: Jesus! I try to help you! And you knocked me down! And I knew you needed support.

World Soul: Stillness came too. I was totally blissed out; the tears came down.

Humanity: I was going underground. Some renewal was possible from there. It were cycles of going in and out: going into the dark, coming out… I became aware of the support of the ground; it is always there. Ground – underground/dark – space… I’m learning willingly to descend… and hanging out in the dark. Go underneath when it was an apocalyptic moment.

Powerful for me was to have World Soul there, on the ground. She has been there all the way through. I apologize that I didn’t notice her before. She needs my attention.

World Soul: There is really this sense that Humanity has to knock itself out. Then nature can recover and then Humanity awakens. I was recovering because of the trees who were recovering, then I was helping to let Humanity stand up. There is a right timing to stay down long enough.

What is the translation of Ria telling Humanity to rest? There might still be a need to tell that it is OK to slow down. Is this a role for the feminine?

When Humanity was on this trip, totally oblivious of the World/Earth, she would need to learn from the World Soul; listen to what it’s mother has to say. It seemed we haven’t evolved at all; it was all ‘me and instant gratification’.

Juice: I go where I can move, looking for openings to do that. There were some times when I felt better. When Stillness was behind me, which felt good. In the ‘arranged birth’ I felt like a destructive force. Life Force is just energy; it needs to balance in the polarity.

“Let magic and joy be honestly and fully expressed.
Let ‘going over the edge’ of current experience be a natural and wholesome experience.
Let there be a total willingness to be crazy and fearless and ready to do anything.
Let their be patience and wisdom and silence and the control of truth.
Let there be a knowing of when and where and with whom it is safe to get fully revealed, with and what level of revelation will be okay with others.
Let there be a circle of safety, not so much to protect ourselves, but rather out of respect for others and the place in the process they are in.
Let there be a fierce and innocent passion to reveal ourselves utterly and release the flow of our natural divinity into the world.”

This was another gem of the conversation in London, offered by Tessa, a friend of the author. I like very much the first and the last sentence of it!

I got this link via Chris Corrigan, and it reminded me of a conversation we had with a few women recently in London – the day after ending our Women Moving the Edge gathering there. One of the quotes that stood out in that conversation was: ““To listen another’s soul into a condition of disclosure and discovery may be almost the greatest service any human being ever performs for another.” by Douglas L. Steer.

In our conversation this quote was adapted to:
The almost greatest act of service one can do for the World,
is to listen it’s Soul into disclosure and discovery.

That really stood out for me!!

I mentioned in an earlier blogpost this week that I had brought the sentence with me ‘Don’t believe in money!’. As this line wove itself through our conversation, it became clear that it is not money itself that is the problem, but the scarcity of it and the one type of money that we have. In many communities there is a lot of workforce and a lot of work to be done, but there is a lack of money to connect both; which is a weird thing in itself. For myself, I realised more than ever, that I would never let the scarcity of money come between me and my life, between me and what I sense is the right thing to do.

We also talked about the collapse of the monetary system as we know it now, and how far away the system is from real value of goods and services. A recent blogpost that I read talkes about ‘the conceptualisation of money’, and how this conceptualisation is a sign of a complex society, but also that it announces the collapse of the society at hand. As much as a collapse might disrupt a lot in our lives, there is a good thing in it probably as it will bring us back to what we called ‘the constraints of matter’. When we can’t use more resources than we actually can handle ourselves, within the limits of our own physicality, then life will slow down and we will be able to see and notice again the wonder that is in nature and all of matter.

There is something life-affirming around constraints and boundaries. If I can see the real differences between my three sons, and really recognise and acknowledge them, then I can see how their soul shines through them. I guess it is the same with tools, with nature, with artefacts. If we can really see them, we can notice the sacredness of it again. We will value the quality of the making, the quality of the materials etc. It is all part of the world soul, the immanent light that is hidden in matter. Not visible when you don’t pay attention, but ever present.

Then somebody asked if a constellation wouldn’t be the right thing to do. Amazing how this proposal always comes from one of the participants and I never think of it myself! As in previous gatherings of Women Moving the Edge it was again an amazing experience!

There was Stillness supported by the Trees; and the Immanent World Soul came to lie on the ground. Stillness was sometimes reaching too high in the sky and then loosing its balance; which then the Trees would compensate for in support. The main point of the constellation was that Stillness seemed to be in opposition with Juice/Creativity/LifeForce. And Humanity was so drawn to the energy of the Life Force that it would go into frantic behavior; like it was drunk. It even didn’t understand the question of Do you feel well? It had no relation with it’s body, didn’t know what was its deepest longing, but finally could come to rest on the floor, next to the World Soul. That was the point when the Trees could rejuvenate and standing tall again. Stillness found it’s place behind the Life Force, both opposite of the Trees, and slowly, slowly Humanity could stand up again in total awe of the World Soul.
